Public Service - Revenue and Disaster Management Department - Village Assistants - Rules to be followed for maximum age limit - Clarification - Issued - Regarding.

1. G.O Ms.No.521, Revenue [Ser.7(2)] Department, dated 17.06.1998.
2. G.O.(Ms)No.91, Human Resources Management (S) Department, dated 13.09.2021.
I am directed to state that the post of Village Assistants is governed by Special Rules for the Tamil Nadu Village Assistants with effect from 01.06.1995 in the reference first cited.
2. I am directed to state that, regarding the age qualification for the post of Village Assistants, the following Rule/Provision to be considered:-
i. The provisions of the Special Rules will prevail over the provisions of the Tamil Nadu Government Servants (Conditions of Service) Act, 2016 as per Section 68 of the said Act.
ii. As per Section 20(8) of the above Act, the maximum age limit provided in the Special Rules shall not apply. But the maximum age limit prescribed in Section 20(8) of the Act shall apply.
iii. The qualification prescribed for the post of Village Assistant is"Appeared for the SSLC Examination" vide G.0.(Ms).No.266, Revenue and Disaster Management [Ser.8(1)] Department, dated 22.05.2025.
iv. As per the first proviso to Section 20(8) of the Act, the maximum age limit shall be increased by five years in respect of candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes or in respect of destitute widows of all castes, who do not possess a general educational qualification, which is higher than the minimum general educational qualification.
v. As per the second proviso to Section 20(8) of the Act, the maximum age limit shall be increased by two years in respect of candidates belonging to Backward Class Muslims, Backward Classes, Most Backward Classes or Denotified Communities, who do not possess a general educational qualification, which is higher than the minimum general educational qualification.

vi. Moreover, the maximum age limit has been increased by two years for COVID-19, vide G.O.Ms. No.91, Human Resources Management(S) Department, dated 13.09.2021. It has also been clarified that,the said increase of two years shall be applicable for direct recruitments made from 13.09.2021 to 12.09.2026 vide letter No.5871863/S/2023-1, Human Resources Management (S) Department,dated 28.04.2025.
3. In the above position, I am directed to state that the maximum age limit for direct recruitment of Village Assistant shall be as follows:-
Categories : Age limit prescribed in Special Rules (in years) / Age limit as per TNGS(CoS) Act,2016 (in years) / Extension prescribed for COVID-19 (in years) / Total maximum age limit to be adopted (in years)
OC / GT : 30 / - / 2 / 32
BC / MBC / DNC : 35/ 2 / 2 / 39
SC / ST / Destitute Widow : 35 / 5 / 2 / 42
4. I am, therefore, directed to request you to instruct the position at para 3 above to the District Collectors to follow the same, while processing the recruitment for the post of Village Assistants.
